Stan and June had decided which phone they were going to purchase. Stan reached for his wallet and to his dismay, there was only $25 in it. He started to sweat, get shaky because his first thought was that his money had been stolen then realized he never put his cash (from his stash) into his wallet. He was so embarrassed that he couldn’t even tell June. Luckily, she had enough cash to cover the cell phone purchase.

Still shaken, Stan was very quiet on the ride back to the camp. June asked, “What’s wrong Stan, are you still mad that I insisted on buying the cell phone?” Stan said, “No June, I guess I’m just a little anxious because we are so far away from home.” June didn’t think that was really the problem but just let it go. She knew from all their years together that if she pushed, Stan would shut down even more.

June decided to change the subject and talk about their plans for the few days they were going to be in Maine.   She wanted to go antiquing, explore the small towns, go swimming at the camp and go dancing at the clubhouse this evening. Well, of course none of this appealed to Stan and he was really worried about the money or lack of it. He didn’t know what they were going to do. (Just a reminder to all you out there, Stan is very old-fashioned and doesn’t have credit or debit cards).

When they got back to the camp, Stan told June, “I don’t feel that well, if you don’t mind, I think I will just lie down for a while. If you want to go shopping or explore, go ahead. I’m sure I will be better later.” So off June went.

Stan paced and paced and decided he would take the camp bus into town and see if he could get a job to earn some money. He went from store to store and nobody was hiring “because of the slow economy.” Stan also thought it had something to do with his age. He decided to regroup and think about other options over lunch. As he walked into the diner, he saw a sign that said “Dishwasher Needed.” He hurried in and asked about the job. The gal he spoke to just happened to be the owner.  Stan decided he was going to approach this interview in a little different way.

My eyesight may be changing, but I can still read a clock and won’t be late. I won’t take a week off because someone broke my heart. I know how to spell customer service – In fact, I know how to deliver it. I don’t expect to be complimented on breathing. I expect praise for a job well done and correction for a bad one. You know, you’ll get extra points in heaven for protecting an endangered species. I am definitely that “workaholic” endangered species. I really need the job. After all, I can’t move in with my Mom and Dad. I have an attention span greater than a flea. I don’t have that cell phone thing super glued to my ear. I might not be quite as physically agile as I was at 20 but I am flexible – I will work different shifts, work from home, change my plans and do any task asked of me without complaining. I still remember the old adage: Work before pleasure.

The owner just looked at Stan and said, “When can you start?” Stan laughed and said, “As soon as I eat lunch.” She replied, “If you can wait until after the lunch rush to eat, you’re hired and I’ll throw lunch in for you then.” Well, Stan was floored, “It’s a deal.”
